Our Story

We didn’t set out to build a prison ministry, produce unique art, or support orphans in Africa. But as we’ve taken steps of faith, God has orchestrated something beautiful, connecting lives in unlikely ways to produce entire generations of hope.

Russells visit Uganda

Dale & Sandy Russell traveled to northern Uganda with a short-term mission team. There they met 78 children who were just rescued from the grasp of a rebel army. The Russells witnessed the first stage of the children’s new home and came away with a new purpose.

path ministries gets a director

After months of assisting Otino-Waa Children’s Village from a distance, Dale became the US Director of operations, leading the non-profit’s efforts in child sponsorship, promotion & fundraising.

Prisoners sponsor children

A unique partnership started forming–funding was sent from inmates in the largest state prison in Oregon.  The first two men gave regularly and encouraged others to do the same.

Prison visit changes perspectives

Ten prisoners convinced the Russells to do a presentation at a prison chapel service, challenging their perception of prison and inmates altogether.

First art group formed

The inmates were determined to stay connected with the orphans at Otino-Waa and created the first art group.

June 2011

sponsorship model introduced

Catering to the unique needs of adults in custody, a customized sponsorship model was introduced: $5/month would connect an inmate to an orphan, with private donors outside the prison matching these funds for greater impact.

Visions of hope established

Visions of Hope was established as a 501(c)(3) public charity on a mission: “To provide opportunity for inmates to support orphans in unique ways while engaging our community and applying God’s love to the process.”

Matching Inmate Sponsors

Inmates begin to sponsor orphans at $5-$10/month with the promise of an outside donor matching everything they give.

Art sales top $100,000

The sale of original art from prison artists exceeds $100,000, with 100% sent to Uganda for the orphans of Otino-Waa Children’s Village.

Fresh Start Backpacks

We saw the need to encourage parolees as they exit prison. Each backpack contains basic hygiene supplies, a first aid kit, socks, snacks, and a New Testament.

With an invitation to bring Visions of Hope projects to an eighth location, we now serve hundreds more inmates.
