Vicissitudes

cinnamon rolls

By AIC Timothy Espinoza

For a long, long time here at SRCI, every Saturday morning breakfast had consisted of a cinnamon roll or coffee cake as the main item. It was one of those quirks of prison, something that did not, and we suppose, could not change. As sure as the prison stood tall and the day comprised of 24 hours, there would be Saturday morning breakfast pastries.

One day in the chow hall a sign appeared – “Beginning on (said date) the Saturday morning breakfast will be on Sunday” Could this be? Could the ground move beneath us? Could East turn West? Could the calendar morph before our disbelieving eyes?

Needless to say, the mysterious notice was shocking and disquieting. Contemplation was suddenly needed. Murmurings spread with “Why” as the beginning of each comment.

As I thought about this unexpected change, and the resulting loss of psychological equilibrium, I had to admit that though this particular change caught all of the AIC unaware, it really shouldn’t have. As mature adults, we all experience sudden and unexpected change, such is life after all, but prison, by its inherent constancy, has lulled us into believing that some things should never change. Of course, this sets us up for the disquiet when they inevitably did!

Breakfast menus may fail, people may depart, sickness may come, yet the God of the Bible, who has inspired the ministries of Otino Waa and Visions of Hope, does not fail, falter, nor change. God is our Rock and as a sponsor of my Otino Waa kids, my earnest desire is to emulate Him and His faithfulness by being that stalwart supporter that He’s called me to be. No changes required.

Postscript: It’s been months now and we still haven’t fully adjusted…….
